First I'll lead off with Patty's 2010 birthday cake, a gardening / vegetable / Cherry Plains theme:

Now for 2011. Last fall, we entered a pie competition in Brooklyn and Patty dreamed up a winning combination of flavors - a pumpkin pie, covered with a maple custard, and topped with pecan streusel. It was an absolutely delicious pie, but had stiff competition with all of the other delicious pies:

In an ironic (and suspicious) turn of events, a different pumpkin-maple-pecan pie ended up winning the overall prize. This left us and Patty very sad:

Luckily, her birthday provided the opportunity to do it all over again, with a happier ending this time. So, I present the cake interpretation of Patty's pie:

 - Pumpkin spice cake -
1 spice cake mix
  1 can pumpkin
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 Eggs
1 tbsp brown sugar

 - Maple frosting -
1 cup Crisco or similar
4 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup maple syrup
1-2 tbsp water
1-2 tsp maple flavoring
1 tbsp brown sugar

 - Pecan streusel -
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
Dash of salt
2 tbsp butter
1 cup chopped pecans
Mix flour, sugar, and salt in bowl, cut in butter, mix in pecans. Lay on baking sheet and bake in oven on low temp (200 degrees F) for 5-7 minutes until clumped together. Add to top of frosted cake.

Happy birthday Patty!
