made in china

It's been awhile since the last post, but some recent cakes from the spring semester.

First off, a birthday / goodbye cake + cupcake assembly for room-mates Victor and Vivian who turned 22 as Viv was preparing to jet-set off to China for a semester abroad. Her friends swore they would lock her away in a wooden chest so she couldn't leave them, so the inside joke became the theme of the cake. Baked a LOT of cake [too much in the end, but oh well]:

A base of chocolate cake topped by a cardboard box to form an interior for the chest, then rimmed with more strips of cake.

Add some nice wood finish, polish, and fill with Chinese-esque mini-cupcakes (Chinese flag, characters, dragons, etc):Finish with lid, details, and padlock:
And the presentation:
Happy birthday Viv + Vic!
