it was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

so this is potentially the last entry for awhile, the best of the best and the worst of the worst.

Starting with the good:

[5] a tie between these two cakes. Mostly because they were team efforts with Joan and they look the most professional out of all the cakes I / we cranked out this summer [fondant clearly helps create a polished appearance]. Plus, the unexplainable satisfaction out of making lifelike objects and details, no matter how long it takes...
[4] Next up was the luau piece. Probably a favorite because it was sort of my own undertaking, figuring out what the customer wanted, plus it's just fun and bright and colorful and tropical. And again, going for the "lifelike" as far as cake goes...
[3] The anglerfish was memorable because it's based on a stuffed animal the customer brought in, which her son absolutely adores. The cake ended up being a great likeness of the toy model - despite how skeptical Joan was in the beginning when I started shaping it - and it's totally one-of-a-kind [go ahead - Google search 'anglerfish cake' and you get nothin, nadda, zilch].[2] The "world" wedding cake came in my last week of work in the summer and quickly became one of my favorites. It just looks straight out of an atlas, it's geographically accurate, and I think Joan was impressed to see how far I had come from my first few cakes.
[1] It's hard to pick my favorites and this may not be my absolute absolute favorite, but I sure did love this roast pig cake. A very strange order from the beginning, for a Hawaiian luau cookout, but yes that is all cake [covered in fondant] and it looks like it just came off the spit.

and of course with the good comes the bad, so a quick rundown of the 3 worst, in my opinion:
Well, that was the first attempt at Tinkerbell, we know she improved a little bit over time...

... And that tiered baby block shower cake did take all week and was a structural nightmare, but the customer ended up loving it in the end...

... And that "Darth Vader" ... well, I can't really think of anything to justify or redeem that one...

ok, well that kind of wraps it up for me. I'd be interested to hear if any of you had favorites or final thoughts and comments. If not, thanks for being loyal readers and check back again!

  2. I googled angler fish cake and found yours! It's fantastic. My son, who will be three in November, is adamant that he have an angler fish party, complete with cake, hats, etc. The hats are no problem but I was dreading the cake - thanks for some inspiration!
